Whether on wheels or on foot, there’s a good chance that you are far from or hard to reach for emergency services, or that there is no one with first aid training around. In either case, a choking incident is probable to lead to death or at least serious injury if you don’t have some other way to deal with it.

Here’s a quick guide on the use of the LifeVac® Anti-choking Device:

• Start by choosing the correctly-sized mask for the casualty and attach to the base of the device (the yellow ring)
• Position the mask so that the top is just above the bridge of the nose, and the bottom is below the lower lip but above the chin
• Hold the mask in place with your non-dominant hand and use your dominant one to depress the bellows
• As soon as the bellows are fully depressed, pull the handle back swiftly to generate the suction that removes the object
• Repeat the two previous steps until successful or until emergency services arrive
• Note: The casualty should always be in a rigid position, either standing, sitting, or lying before using the LifeVac on them
