Carbon Monoxide Detector

Reliable carbon monoxide detectors provide essential protection against the dangers of carbon monoxide in homes and workplaces. Designed to detect this invisible and odourless gas, these devices sound an alarm when harmful levels are present, giving occupants early warning to take action and move to safety. Manufactured to meet recognised safety standards, these carbon monoxide detectors support safer living environments while helping protect people from the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning.

How Do Carbon Monoxide Detectors Work?

Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are essential safety devices that detect this dangerous, odourless gas. They operate using electrochemical sensors that measure changes in electrical currents within a special chemical solution. When carbon monoxide is present, these currents shift, triggering the detector’s alarm which encourages occupants to seek safety.

What To Do If Your Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarms

As carbon monoxide is invisible and odourless, a detector is the only way to know it's present within your home or property. If your CO alarm activates, take immediate action: open windows and doors to ventilate, turn off gas supplies and evacuate to a safe distance. Then, contact a qualified gas engineer. Note that if the detector beeps intermittently, it likely means the battery needs replacing, rather than an emergency.

Recognising Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms

Carbon monoxide poisoning can feel like the flu, with symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, and confusion. Even low CO levels can be deadly, so it’s crucial to trust your detector and act fast in the event that it activates.

Placing Carbon Monoxide Detectors Effectively

Install carbon monoxide detectors at head height, as CO rises. In rooms with a boiler, position the detector 1 to 3 metres away from it, but at the same height. Avoid placing detectors above fireplaces or stoves, and aim to have one on each floor of your home. Ensure the device is out of reach of children to prevent tampering.

Portable detectors are versatile, ideal for homes, caravans, and boats, and can be wall-mounted or stand-alone. We recommend the Firehawk Portable Carbon Monoxide Alarm for on-the-move protection from gas leaks.

Types of Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We offer both battery-operated and mains-powered CO detectors. Battery models include options with AA batteries (which have low-battery indicators) and models with long-lasting lithium-ion batteries. For easy monitoring, our Kidde premium detectors come with digital displays to show current CO levels at a glance.

All detectors we provide are British Kitemarked and meet BS EN50291 standards for safety and performance.

Legal Requirements for Carbon Monoxide Detectors

In England and Wales, carbon monoxide detectors are mandatory in rented properties and holiday homes with any carbon-fuelled appliances. In Scotland, detectors with sealed lithium batteries are required in every room containing such appliances or a flue.
