Lithium-ion batteries are extensively used in today's world, and while not frequently problematic, they pose a significant challenge if they explode or catch fire. In such cases, a chemical reaction produces flammable gas, potentially causing the device to catch fire. Traditional fire extinguishers, including powder types, cannot extinguish these fires. A lithium battery fire extinguisher ensures safety from fires caused by faulty or overheated batteries.

With notable battery failures such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in 2017 and the increasing popularity of lithium-ion batteries, it is clear that a suitable, safe, and effective fire extinguisher was needed. How Do Lithium Battery Fire Extinguishers Work?

Our Lith-Ex fire extinguishers use AVD (Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion), a non-toxic and revolutionary extinguishing agent, which is deployed as a mist. When sprayed over the battery, it forms a film on the surface that instantly dries, cooling the flames, preventing reignition, and creating an oxygen barrier so that the fire burns out.

Other solutions, such as Firexo and LFX fire extinguishers, utilise an extinguishing agent that absorbs heat from the battery. This method removes one of the three essential elements of a fire (oxygen, heat, and fuel) and disrupts the chain reaction in thermal runaway, preventing other cells from overheating.

Fire Ratings for Lithium Battery Fires

Currently, there is no official fire class for lithium-ion batteries, as the fire industry can be slow to adapt. Consequently, these fire extinguishers cannot display the British Kitemark, fire rating, or be approved to BS EN3. However, you can be confident that these fire extinguishers are manufactured in accordance with BS EN3 requirements, have undergone extensive testing, and are CE Marked. Additionally, there are now fire tests available for manufacturers to verify that their lithium-ion battery fire extinguishers perform as claimed.
