Choosing a respirator is a two-part decision: what to filter, and how well the mask seals against the face. Filter class matches the substances and exposure pattern you're dealing with. Seal is what fit testing exists to confirm.

Respirators or dust masks?

A dust mask is a disposable FFP-rated device for particulates and low-hazard tasks. A respirator with interchangeable filters handles heavier, repeated, or chemical exposure. An hour of sanding once a month suits a dust mask. Spraying paint or coatings daily calls for a respirator, because the filter can be matched to the exact chemistry you're exposed to.

Fit testing as part of the specification

Under COSHH, any tight-fitting respirator used to control hazardous substance exposure needs to be fit-tested to the individual wearer. The same product can pass a fit test on one face and fail on another, so testing belongs in the specification alongside the respirator itself, and needs repeating whenever the wearer changes or the product changes. Which respirator is most effective for my situation?

Start with how often and how intensively you're exposed to hazards. If you're a painter, decorator, or trades worker handling solvents and light chemicals regularly but not as your primary daily task, the A1P2 Zero Maintenance Compact Mask provides solid protection without the complexity of managing filters. What does 'zero maintenance' mean in practice - and why does it matter?

It means the A1P2 has no replaceable parts. When it reaches the end of its service life, the whole mask is disposed of and replaced. There's nothing to clean, no filters to change, and no components to inspect. For employers, this removes a real compliance risk — with reusable respirators, there's always a chance workers continue using a degraded or expired filter without realising it, which undermines the protection entirely. Zero maintenance eliminates that variable. The trade-off is that once the mask is used up it can't be serviced, making it better suited to moderate or intermittent exposure than to daily heavy-duty use.
