Ordering for a workforce

HSG53 treats disposables marked NR (not reusable) as single-shift use, so the order quantity has to cover one mask per person per shift plus enough spare stock for masks damaged, heavily contaminated, or removed and set aside during the shift. Underordering leads to workers keeping compromised masks in service, which is the failure the single-shift rule exists to prevent.

Shelf life and buying volume

Every disposable mask has a manufacturer-defined shelf life for unopened storage. Buying large quantities that outlast that shelf life is a false economy. Order to the realistic daily rate plus a buffer for spikes: a small team taking occasional masks for site visits orders differently from a production floor replacing masks daily.

For advice on disposable masks for a specific site or team size, call the team on 0808 175 4375.

When is a disposable mask the right choice over a reusable respirator?

Disposable masks are the right choice where convenience, hygiene, and cost-efficiency matter more than long-term repeated use. They're ideal for environments where workers rotate frequently, where contamination risk means masks shouldn't be reused, or where the hazard level doesn't justify the investment in a reusable half mask with replaceable filters. For workers exposed to hazards daily over the long term, a reusable respirator with the correct filters is the more reliable and cost-effective solution. For occasional, light, or varied exposure - or where managing and maintaining reusable equipment isn't practical - disposables are the appropriate choice.

What's the difference between an FFP2 mask and a Type IIR medical mask?

They serve different purposes. FFP2 is a respiratory protection standard - it filters at least 94% of airborne particles and is designed to protect the wearer from inhaling hazardous substances such as dust, fumes, and aerosols. Type IIR is a medical standard - it's designed to protect the environment from the wearer by filtering exhaled droplets, making it the appropriate choice in healthcare and clinical settings where infection control is the priority.

What's the difference between a valved and non-valved FFP2 mask?

A valved mask has a one-way exhalation valve that makes breathing out easier and reduces heat and moisture build-up inside the mask - making it more comfortable for extended wear. However, because exhaled air passes through the valve unfiltered, valved masks do not protect those around the wearer. They should not be used in sterile environments or where the wearer could pose an infection risk to others. A non-valved mask filters both inhaled and exhaled air, making it the correct choice where protection of others is also a requirement.

Do these masks meet current UK and European safety standards?

Yes. The FFP2 masks in this range meet EN 149:2001+A1:2009, the European standard for filtering facepiece respirators, and carry the CE mark. The Type IIR medical masks meet EN 14683, the standard for medical face masks. Both standards remain recognised in the UK following the transition from CE to UKCA marking — check individual product listings for specific certification details.

Why do you have a fit testing kit listed alongside disposable masks?

Fit testing confirms that a disposable FFP mask creates an effective seal against a specific wearer's face - because the same mask can fit one person well and another poorly. The fit testing kit is listed here because it's the tool you need before putting workers in disposable FFP masks for hazardous substance exposure. Without a fit test, you can't be confident the mask is actually protecting the wearer, regardless of its filtration rating.
